OBJECTIVES
The design primarily aims to create a system for recording
the attendance of students without the use of the pen and papermethod. Specific
Objectives are as follows: a.To create a device that uses the RFID chips of the
student’s ID in order to record their attendance. b.To create a device that
will record the student list through an android application. c.To create a
device that will allow the instructor to know whether the student belongs to
the class or not. Code Shoppy d.To create a device where the professor can access the files
through their smartphone or their PC.
CONCEPTUAL
FRAMEWORK
Firstly,
a new student card is flashed to the RFID Reader to capture and recognize the
unique ID in the card. The captured ID is then used to register the mapped
student ID into the system. Once registered, the student card can then be used
by flashing it to the RFID Reader to record the student attendance. For this
purpose, the log data, which include the current timestamp, is also
recorded[6]. The RFID tag that has been obtained will then be sent to the
Raspberry Pi to be analysed. Upon comparison of the RFID code and the data
within the Raspberry Pi, the name of the student along with their credentials
(i.e., student number and whether they belong in the respective section) would
be obtained. The corresponding student will then be marked as present for that
day by the device. The next step is to connect the Raspberry Pi to the device
of the professor by the use of a personal hotspot and anandroid application.
Through the use of the android application, the professor is able to update his
records in hisdevice. The data that would be obtained from the Raspberry Pi to
the professor’s personal device is obtainable as it would be a .csv file (comma
separated value file) which is a universally usable in most file readers.
GENERAL SYSTEM DESIGN
The general design of the system is
mainly composed of 5 parts. The first part, which is the RFID, is the Mapúa
student ID. It contains a unique code that represents each and every student in
the school[7]. It will serve as the attendance of the student once it is tapped
on the RFID scanner. This code is sent to the Raspberry Pi using an RFID
scanner. The system will detect the student ID and record their attendance[8].
The Raspberry Pi is responsible for (a) storing the unique ID from the
students’ ID done through registration; (b) recording the timestamp when the ID
was tapped[9]; (c) determining whether the student belongs to the specific
class or not. Through wireless LAN, the instructor is able to retrieve the attendance
record and update the file. The Raspberry Pi uses a USB wireless dongle that
has a hotspot capability so that a smartphone can connect to it. The smartphone
uses an application to interface with the device[10]. A software application is
installed and executed in the smart phone to facilitate the registration and
administration of attendance.
RESULTS
Table 1 shows the tests for whether the registration of RFID
tags to a class is successful. In the test, the meaning of a “Successful”
expected output means the RFID tag is registered to a single unique student
successfully. While an “Unsuccessful” expected output is because the same RFID
